Baptism

1.    Review Romans 6:1–13 and answer the following questions in writing:
What must be done with sin before baptism can occur?
Before baptism can occur we must repent and recognize our sins. We need to be able to understand the covenants that we are making with the Lord.
What events from Christ’s life are symbolized in baptism?
Christ’s resurrection symbolizes baptism because of the newness of life. As you go down into the water you burry your sins and come up out of the water to new life.
Considering this symbolism, why couldn’t someone be baptized by sprinkling?
Like mentioned, you need to go completely under the water because emersion of water is like Jesus’s death and resurrection.
What do these verses teach us about how we can maintain the “newness of life”?
We need to change from old to new. Also being able to be resurrected is the newness of life for us as we keep the commandments.
According to Mosiah 3:19, what part of us would ideally die at baptism?
The natural man should ideally die at baptism.
2.    Study Romans 6:14–23. Write a paragraph that describes how we know whose servant we are. Then write a statement identifying the true source of freedom.
As we keep the commandments and serve our fellow beings we are being servants of the Lord. When we sin we know that we are doing the works of Satan. Our actions show who we really are. We will be blessed as we do great things.

Forgiveness

What were the people of Corinth commanded to do “if any have caused grief”?
They were to forgive him, comfort him, and confirm their love toward him if they have caused any grief.

What blessings do we see if we forgive?
As we forgive others, the Lord will also forgive us.

What is the danger in failing to forgive?

We will not be forgiven by the Lord if we fail to forgive one another and will be judged at judgement day.

(Forgiveness is such an important commandment. As we forgive one another we continue to understand the Atonement of Christ. Christ forgave us by dying for our sins so we can also forgive one another and repent.)

The Sacrament

The important word Luke used in describing the sacrament that Nephi also used but Paul did not.
The important word that Luke used in describing the sacrament was REMEMBER. It is so often that people forget why we take the sacrament or what the ideal purpose of taking the sacrament is all about.
In Luke 22:19 it says, "And he took bread, and gave thanks, and brake it, and gave unto them, saying, This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me." Christ told us that we need to take the sacrament in remembrance of him. Also stating in Moroni 4:3 Moroni says, "O God, the Eternal Father, we ask thee in the name of thy Son, Jesus Christ, to bless and sanctify this bread to the souls of all those who partake of it; that they may eat in REMEMBRANCE of the body of thy Son, and witness unto thee, O God the, the Eternal Father, that they are willing ti take upon them the name of thy Son, and ALWAYS REMEMBER him, and keep his commandments which he hath given them, that they may always have his Spirit to be with them. Amen." As we partake the sacrament we need to really remember what Christ has done for us. I know that before partaking the sacrament I think of all the things that I've done that week and ponder to see if I am worthy enough to take the sacrament. Then as they say the sacrament prayer in sacrament meeting I listen to the words that are said and remember what Christ has gone through for me and for my fellow beings. He died for our sins!
What is the difference between what is taught in 1 Corinthians 11:27-29 and 3 Nephi 18: 28-29 with regards to the counsel about when to not partake of the sacrament?
In 1 Corinthians 11:27-29 it says, "27. Wherefore whosoever shall eat this bread, and drink this cup of the Lord, unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord. 28. But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of that cup. 29. For, he that eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord's body." In 3 Nephi 18: 28-29 is also says, "...whoso eateth and drinketh my flesh and blood unworthily eatheth and drinketh damnation to his soul." We should not partake the sacrament unworthily because it's like we are mocking Jesus Christ. The only way to cleanse imperfection and impurity is obedience. As we obey the commandments and are true to our beliefs we can have faith which leads to repentance, which leads to baptism (sacrament and temple), and which also leads to having the gift of the Holy Ghost. When we continue to keep the commandments and are honest to ourselves and the Lord when taking the sacrament, those things will increase and make us stronger in the gospel.
What did Paul teach that explains why we don't want to partake of the sacrament unworthily?
We don't want to partake the sacrament unworthily because we will be damned. We are to take the sacrament to remember all the things that the Lord has done for us, not mock him.
What can you do to make the sacrament a more meaningful experience in your life both on Sundays and during the week?
I think what I can do is to be true to myself. Know when it is right for me to take and not take the sacrament. I know that in order to always have the spirit to be with me, I would need to be honest in all my doings. Even when it's hard sometimes to not take the sacrament because people will know, it's better for you to let people judge rather than play God.

The Resurrection

Who will rise first to meet the Lord?
Those who are dead will rise up first to meet the Lord, which are those who followed Christ’s teachings. Also those who did not know the commandment of Christ in their days.
Who, in addition to the righteous dead, will be caught up to meet the lord?
The ones who are alive will meet up with the lord in the clouds.
Where will they be caught up to?
They shall be caught up to meet Christ in the midst of the pillar of heaven.
How will the righteous saints participate in the Second Coming?
In 1 Thessalonians 4:17 it says, “Those who are alive shall be caught up together with those who are in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air."
Who will be resurrected at the Second Coming?
Everyone will be resurrected at the second coming.
How do the Joseph Smith Translation changes for the 1 Thessalonians 4:15, 17 clarify what Paul taught about who would be alive when Christ comes again.
The dead who are righteous will rise and the people who are alive and righteous will ruse first.
Who will not survive the second coming?
Those who are wicked.
When will they be resurrected?
At the end of the millennium.

Paul's First Mission

Paul, who was later named Saul, departed from Antioch on his first mission and taught in Perga, Cyprus, Paphos, and Debre.

HELPFUL POINTS FOR DISCOURAGED MISSIONARIES:

  • Laying on of hands. The priesthood power will always help bless those who are in need or discouraged.
  • The gift of the Holy Ghost can always guide you even when you are discouraged. Find the spirit and let it guide.
  • Fast and pray

As Saul and Barnabas, Saul's companion, taught together. The Lord sent missionaries out by two to support each other by testifying for one another. They were known as healed gods because they healed people. They rent (ripped) their clothes off of them and said “why are you going to offer sacrifices to us?” Telling people that they were sent from Christ.Paul departed from Antioch on his first mission. Perga, Cyprus,
Healed as gods because they healed people. They rent (ripped) their clothes off of them and said “why are you going to offer sacrifices to us?” Telling people that they were sent from Christ.
Only through much tribulations we must continue to have faith to enter the kingdom of God.

The Day of Pentecost

Pentecost is held fifty days after the feast of the pass over. The Jews celebrate the feast of the harvest and the twelve apostles meet together. Before Jesus left he told his disciples to remain in Jerusalem and wait for the promise of the gifts of the Holy Ghost.
They gathered in a room and in Acts 2:2-4 it says, "there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind...and there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as fire, and it sat upon each of them and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost and began to speak with other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance"
Peter taught everyone to repent and be baptize for the remission of sins and receive the Holy Ghost. This is the day that the Lord sent the Holy Ghost to be with man until he comes again.
